Hartwall investigates odor in mineral waters amid consumer complaints in Finland
An unusual smell has been reported in the mineral waters produced by Hartwall, a Finnish beverage manufacturer. Descriptions of the odor have included terms like “musty,” “cellar-like,” and “moldy,” especially on social media platforms such as Facebook in groups focused on women’s health.
Many consumers have taken to a discussion thread to express their concerns, stating they have filed complaints with Hartwall about the foul-smelling packaging. In response, Hartwall has confirmed that they have received multiple complaints regarding this issue.
Several customers have reportedly chosen not to consume their purchased drinks due to the unpleasant odor. However, according to Hartwall’s internal investigations, the drinks are completely safe for consumption.
Titta Jaakkola, Hartwall’s Director of Communications and Content, explained via email that during the summer, they received plastic bottle caps from their cork supplier that might have a plastic odor affecting a small portion of the products. Jaakkola stated that there have been no microbiological issues identified in the corked boxes or the drinks themselves; the problem appears to be related solely to the smell which the supplier is currently investigating.
Customers who feel that their product does not meet expectations are advised to return the drink to the place of purchase or contact Hartwall’s consumer service for assistance, Jaakkola added.
