Seventy small earthquakes recorded near Sundhnúkur craters in Iceland
Over the past 24 hours, approximately 70 small earthquakes have been recorded in the area around the Sundhnúkur craters, with an additional twenty since midnight. Land continues to uplift, indicating that magma is accumulating beneath the surface.
Sigríður Magnea Óskarsdóttir, a natural hazards expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, notes that seismic activity has been increasing in recent days. She emphasizes that it is impossible to predict when a significant event may occur, as the amount of magma has reached levels similar to those prior to the last eruption. Therefore, it is crucial to closely monitor the situation.
Deformation data and modeling indicate that magma pressure is continuously increasing beneath the Svartsengi area, mirroring trends observed in the weeks leading up to previous magma intrusions and eruptions. However, Sigríður Magnea clarifies that these deformation signals do not signify that an eruption is imminent.
