Frost expected across the capital region overnight

Iceland, road conditions, weather

Temperatures are nearing freezing on Kjalarnes, and frost could spread across the capital region overnight, mbl.is reports.

At 10 p.m., the temperature at the Icelandic Meteorological Office’s station in Öskjuhlíð, Reykjavík, was about 1.5 degrees Celsius. Forecaster Birgir Örn Höskuldsson said temperatures were close to freezing on Kjalarnes and that frost had formed in many parts of West Iceland and inland.

The forecast issued at 9.20 p.m. called for light northerly or variable winds overnight, with clear skies in many places and freezing temperatures widely. Roads are generally dry, but frost or black ice may form in some places, especially in dips near the sea, lakes or rivers.

Höskuldsson said widespread icy conditions were unlikely on streets and paths in southwest Iceland because they were mostly dry. The greatest risk of ice was in the northeast and east, where some precipitation had fallen, particularly on mountain roads.

Conditions are expected to warm tomorrow in sunshine, with otherwise calm autumn weather.
