The Faroese Medical Association is warning that the specialist funding pool is set to receive no allocation next year, KVF reports. Since 2017, the pool has helped finance 19.5 specialist doctor positions.

A working group appointed by the Ministry of Health recommended in 2024 that the pool continue and that its funding could be increased, saying the arrangement had worked well.

Recruiting enough specialist doctors to the Faroe Islands has long been a challenge, the association said. The number of older residents is growing, increasing demand for examinations and treatment, and consequently for specialists.

A 2024 report from the ministry recommended increasing the number of authorised specialist positions in the Hospital Service from 68 to 121. Last year’s allocation was just under four million, but next year the money will be moved into the regular operating budget to fund positions already established. The association said no new money will be added to the pool to create more specialist positions in 2027.
