Iranian regime praises Icelandic minister’s UN criticism of Israel
Iran’s clerical regime has put up displays across Tehran praising Icelandic Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir for her criticism of Israel at the UN General Assembly, mbl.is reports.
The banners carry the headline “Icelandic reprimand” and quote her as saying to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: “It is you, sir, who are preventing humanitarian aid!” The wording is not a verbatim translation of her speech, but mbl.is says it reflects its meaning. The displays describe the statement as coming from “Iceland’s foreign minister, directly to a representative of the occupying government” and call it “the voice of humanity.”
Tehran’s city decorations committee said the campaign was being shown on billboards throughout the city. The article also says another campaign praised Ireland’s national football team for supposedly refusing to play Israel, although the team did play the match.
Iran has supported Hamas with money and weapons for years, according to the article, as well as other groups opposed to Israel, including Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah. The United States and Israel have carried out joint military operations against Iran’s government since late February.
Since the fighting began, 19 US soldiers have been killed and about 850 wounded, while 32 Israeli soldiers and 60 civilians have been killed and about 7,800 people wounded, including 683 soldiers, the article says. Iranian authorities have reported about 3,500 deaths in Iran, nearly half of them civilians. The Iranian regime is also suspected of planning terrorist attacks elsewhere in the West in connection with the conflict.
