Dozens of people say they have been tricked into buying sleep products from a fake website posing as the Icelandic company Betri svefn, mbl.is reports. Some paid tens of thousands of krónur for products that were never delivered.
Betri svefn managing director Erla Björnsdóttir said people had contacted the company after ordering from betrisvefn.com. The site is not connected to Betri svefn or its official website, betrisvefn.is.
Björnsdóttir first became aware of the site several weeks ago, when customers began emailing the company. She said it was designed to look convincing, using an Icelandic brand name and Icelandic text, and suggesting that doctors were behind the business.
Customers have contacted Betri svefn because they believe they bought from the company. Björnsdóttir said she had reported the site to police about three weeks ago and contacted its hosting providers and Shopify, but had received no response.
Complaints stopped for a time, leading her to think the matter had been resolved. The site later reappeared in what she described as a more convincing form, and emails from people who thought they had bought from Betri svefn have increased again in recent days. She urged consumers to avoid the site and advised anyone who lost money to contact their card provider.
