The Faroese Road Safety Council has marked its 50th anniversary, but its work is not finished despite improved traffic conditions, KVF reports.
The council was founded by people concerned that road safety was inadequate. In its early years, it carried out work now done by specialist advisers, because road safety expertise was not routinely part of tasks such as road design.
Director Lovisa Petersen Glerfoss said the council’s core mission remains the same, although its focus may have changed. Its foundation is changing attitudes, she said, and that takes time.
The council works to encourage people to wear seatbelts, avoid speeding and concentrate on driving. People know what is good for them, Glerfoss said, but that knowledge does not always lead them to do the right thing.
