A member of Finland’s Parliament told Yle that someone may have entered their Helsinki apartment twice, leaving a dismantled electrical outlet and a kitchen cabinet’s skirting board on the floor.
The first incident was last autumn, when the outlet’s cover was found in the middle of the floor. The second was last winter, when a particleboard skirting board from a kitchen cabinet was left there.
The MP initially thought a careless maintenance worker had visited and forgotten to leave a note. They have since contacted Parliament’s security department but have not reported the incidents to police, saying they cannot recall even the months when they happened.
A second MP told Yle they suspected someone had entered their home after finding something in the toilet bowl, which had not been flushed. They found no other signs. The MP said the incident caused irritation rather than fear and had not affected their ability to work. They reported it to Parliament’s security department.
Yle has been told of fewer than 20 suspected entries into MPs’ homes over the past year. There have been no signs of forced entry or theft, but residents have reported indications that someone may have been inside, including open doors and lights left on.
The MPs have not been identified to protect their privacy. The cases have no apparent link to party affiliation, gender or another common background factor.
Police have begun a preliminary inquiry, but no formal criminal investigation has been opened. The Finnish Security Intelligence Service is monitoring the situation. Parliament is assessing the scale of the cases and has advised MPs on monitoring their personal security. No motive or responsible party is known.
