Parents of pupils at Tvøroyri School have agreed not to give their children smartphones until they turn 15, KVF reports. The school board introduced an agreement for parents to sign.

Support was strong when the agreement was signed at the start of the school year, said Annika Jónsveinsdóttir Nolsøe, chair of the school board.

The board says children are not ready to carry the world in their pockets and that more are struggling and feeling powerless. It says the pressure on children’s peace of mind threatens a safe Faroese childhood.

Óðin Hammerfoss, chair of the school’s student council, supports the plan. Nolsøe said the biggest challenge is getting parents to switch off their own smartphones.
