GTS says evening security cut complaints at Mjódd
Complaints to coach company Guðmundur Tyrfingsson (GTS) have fallen sharply since it added evening security at the Mjódd bus interchange this spring, the company told mbl.is. GTS operates the interchange.
The company is due to meet with Reykjavík City to discuss safety at Mjódd, including the use of surveillance cameras.
The meeting follows an assault there last weekend, when a group of five youths attacked another young person and a man in his 50s. The young person was hit on the head with a glass bottle.
GTS owner and managing director Tyrfingur Guðmundsson said the company increased security in the spring in response to conditions at the interchange. He stressed that last weekend’s assault did not take place inside the part of the interchange under GTS’s control and happened after the company had closed.
In an earlier response to mbl.is, Reykjavík City said GTS was responsible for the interchange’s daily operations, including security. GTS said it would provide more detail about the division of responsibilities and any further measures after the meeting with the city.
The company is also working with police, Flotinn, a mobile youth centre, and Reykjavík City on possible measures. Guðmundsson said improving safety required cooperation among the different parties involved and called for a coordinated effort.
