Serious car accident near Gígjukvísl leads to closure of Suðurlandsvegur in Iceland
A serious car accident has occurred near Gígjukvísl, leading to the closure of Suðurlandsvegur west of the site for an indefinite period. According to local police, two cars coming from opposite directions collided at Lómagnúp in Öræfasveit. Significant resources were deployed in response to the accident.
Brynja Sverrisdóttir, a chief officer at the Southern Police, reported that there were four passengers in total across the vehicles, but the extent of their injuries remains unclear. A Coast Guard helicopter was dispatched, transporting two of the passengers to Landspítalinn in Fossvogur for treatment. The other two individuals were taken to the hospital via ambulances.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Southern Police.
In a separate response earlier today, another Coast Guard helicopter was called to Kirkjubæjarklaustur for an individual who required transport to the hospital for medical care. This person was also transported to Landspítalinn in the afternoon.
