Health authorities investigate potential E. coli outbreak in Rangárþingi Ytra, Iceland

Health authorities in the South of Iceland are investigating a potential outbreak of E. coli at Rjúpnavellir in Rangárþingi Ytra. Concerns about the infection were first reported to the local health department, which has since initiated an investigation.

Confirmed cases of E. coli have been found in the drinking water, but it remains unclear whether this is the source of the illness affecting individuals or if another factor is involved. Results from further tests on patients are awaited, and additional water samples are also being analyzed.

The outbreak was reported to health authorities today, with the infections occurring over a two-week period. It is believed that the bacteria may have affected multiple groups of hikers who had recently returned from the highlands. All affected groups stayed at Rjúpnavellir during their time in the area.

Attempts to reach the management of Rjúpnavellir for comment were unsuccessful.
