Iceland’s planned police restructuring will create three police districts, rather than the four or five initially proposed, Justice Minister Þorbjörg Sigríður Gunnlaugsdóttir told mbl.is.
The original plan was to reduce the number of police districts from nine to four or five. The Ministry of Justice said its analysis and work with a consultation group found that this option would not meet the aims of the reorganisation.
The ministry said three districts would provide a better balance in the police force’s administrative structure: one large district in the southwest and two strong districts in rural areas. It also considered it important for the rural districts to be comparable in size and capacity.
