Casa Christi, a building used by Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík, is expected to be ready for teaching again in autumn 2030, according to mbl.is. The plan is for all the school’s activities to take place on its campus at Lækjargata.

Education and Children’s Minister Inga Sæland and the school’s rector, Sólveig Guðrún Hannesdóttir, expressed their shared intention at a celebration marking the school’s 180th anniversary. The Government of Iceland said the commitment was announced in a statement.

Casa Christi, at Amtmannsstígur 2b, has long housed classes and other school activities but has not been usable for teaching since 2021. The school has since rented additional premises, adding costs and leaving some of its operations outside the campus.

“We should be proud of the history of Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík, but pride alone does not repair buildings,” Sæland said. She added that students and teachers deserved proper facilities and that it was time to return the historic building to use.

Hannesdóttir said the school was pleased to see the ministry’s willingness to address its urgent need for space, adding that it was important to bring all operations together in suitable premises and find a lasting solution.

The commitment is part of the minister’s efforts to improve facilities at upper secondary schools. Work is also under way on vocational training facilities at four schools and on new premises for the Technical College.
