In a high-profile drug-related case at the Reykjavik District Court, all defendants pleaded not guilty during the afternoon hearing. The case involves an alleged extensive drug trafficking operation and organized crime.

The presumed ringleader of this drug trafficking network, along with 14 others associated with him, denied the serious charges against them, while three other defendants were absent and will respond later. The courtroom was crowded, with eleven defendants appearing alongside their legal representatives, and four participating via video conference. Many of the accused concealed their faces, showing visible discomfort at being in court.

The charges range from importing over two kilograms of cocaine into the country via a cruise ship in April, to possession of drugs, money laundering, and firearms violations. One defendant faces additional charges for attempted murder related to an incident unrelated to the organized crime activities.

Judge Barbara Björnsdóttir addressed each defendant individually, asking them to respond to the accusations. All 15 who responded today denied guilt regarding the most severe allegations, although a few admitted to lesser charges related to possession. Both the judge and prosecutor Karl Ingi Vilbergsson had anticipated some admissions, given that 18 individuals are charged in this matter.

The main trial is scheduled to take place at the end of September. The judge had initially hoped for an earlier date due to four defendants being in custody, but defense attorneys opposed this tight schedule, requesting more time to prepare their arguments.
