The Faroes have opened a competition to find an official song for next summer’s Island Games, Kringvarp Føroya reports. Faroese songwriters and musicians can submit entries by December 1.
The aim is to find a song that helps create a sense of identity and atmosphere around the Games, said Island Games coordinator Solby Christiansdóttir and Kringvarp Føroya music coordinator Rúni Jákupsson.
Organisers want to give songwriters broad creative freedom, while hoping for an energetic, inclusive song that both children and adults can embrace.
When the Games were last held in the Faroes, in 1989, the song “Føroyar framá” was written for the event. It has since become widely known and is still played at major Faroese sporting events.
A jury will assess the entries, and organisers plan to give listeners a role in choosing the winner. The song will be announced at the Sports Awards ceremony. Prizes will be awarded for the top three entries, and more than one song may become part of the 2027 Games.
