A man from Greve and a woman from Herlev have been convicted of handling Pokémon cards worth more than 132,000 kroner, DR reports, citing the Prosecution Service at Copenhagen West Police.

The woman was also convicted of selling the cards and defrauding a shop in Ringsted. The man received a suspended sentence of 60 days in prison and the woman a suspended sentence of four months. She has appealed, while the man is considering whether to do so.

The cards have been returned to the man who originally reported them stolen, the prosecution service said.

Pokémon cards have surged in popularity and value in recent years, prompting police to urge people to take care with valuable collections and how they store and display them. Criminals may monitor online forums about the cards and target people who have particularly valuable ones.

“It becomes like an expensive watch that can be sold on the right markets,” said Kenneth Lund Jensen, a deputy police inspector with South Zealand and Lolland-Falster Police.
