City boosts police presence at Mjódd transfer station

Reykjavik has increased police visibility at the Mjódd transfer station in recent weeks amid concerns about groups gathering there, the city told mbl.is. The response followed a physical assault at the station over the weekend.

The city said police would continue their increased presence. Flotinn, Reykjavik’s mobile youth centre, has also been monitoring young people and visiting the station outside youth centre opening hours to talk with them.

The city did not say whether the current security arrangements were adequate, but said all parties were reviewing the situation and looking for ways to improve it.

GTS ehf., the station’s operator, is responsible for its daily operation, including security, toilets and overall management, according to the city. Security requirements are set out in the lease agreement with GTS and were reiterated in a 2025 letter of intent.

mbl.is had asked GTS how security is provided, whether arrangements had changed since the spring and whether further measures were planned. The company had not responded by the time the article was updated.

More camera surveillance inside the building has also been discussed, but no formal decision has been made at a building owners’ association meeting. Reykjavik owns only part of the building and must follow majority decisions by the association, the city said.

Work is under way to design and carry out improvements to the waiting area, including changes to access and toilet facilities.

Individual businesses at Mjódd also have their own security. Nettó, which operates a shop there, said its security arrangements were good and that it worked well with police. The weekend assault did not take place inside the shop, and neither staff nor the store’s security guard noticed it, the company said.
