Public buses will drive directly to Keflavík Airport terminal

Public buses will begin driving directly to Keflavík Airport’s terminal on October 1, allowing route 55 passengers to get off beside the airport coaches, mbl.is reports. The changes affect routes 55 and 89.

Route 55 runs between the airport and either BSÍ in Reykjavík or Fjörður in Hafnarfjörður. Route 89 connects the airport with Reykjanesbær and Suðurnesjabær. The timetable for route 55 will remain unchanged.

Two new stops have been added at the terminal, bringing the total number of public bus stops there to three. Passengers travelling to catch a flight can get off at the new departures stop, but cannot board there. Arriving passengers can board at a new stop on the arrivals side.

The walkway from the terminal to the arrivals stop has been covered to shelter passengers from the weather. Signs inside the terminal and at the stops and walkways have also been replaced or improved.

Route 55 will carry bicycles on five of its 12 regular departure times. On weekdays, the route runs either to BSÍ or to Fjörður.

Infrastructure Minister Eyjólfur Ármannsson called the changes an important step towards improving public transport to the airport. He said the next priority was to create the conditions to increase service frequency and improve the route.

The project is a collaboration between the Road Administration, Isavia and Public Transport of the Capital Region. It is based on proposals from a working group on public transport between the capital region and Keflavík Airport.
