Purra says state should not prop up media companies

Finnish Finance Minister Riikka Purra says the state should not prop up media companies that cannot operate in the market, commenting on the possible closure of news agency STT’s news and photo services in a post on X, Yle reports.

“In my view, the state should not artificially keep media operators alive just because they have a history and once had traditions. If there are no conditions for operating in the market and no genuine demand, then there is none,” Purra wrote.

She said Sanoma’s news outlets’ decision to stop using STT’s services at the turn of 2025-26 left an clearly insufficient basis for STT’s operations. Purra added that other commercial media also operate in challenging market conditions.
