Police arrest two in fraud targeting older people

An 18-year-old man is due to appear in a custody hearing in Odense on suspicion of extensive contact fraud targeting older people, DR reports.

Police arrested him and a 15-year-old boy in Nyborg yesterday as they were making withdrawals using a cash card they had allegedly obtained from a citizen by fraud, Funen Police said.

Both are suspected of multiple offences in recent weeks on Funen, including in Assens, Kerteminde, Nyborg and Odense, as well as in several places in Jutland.

Police said the suspects called older people pretending to be from their bank and offered to protect their valuables and payment cards. Victims then handed over cards, which were used to withdraw money.

Funen Police urged people to remember that banks and public authorities will not call to request card replacements or offer to collect cash, valuables or payment cards. The 15-year-old has been released but remains under investigation. The 18-year-old is due before Odense District Court at noon.
