Sweden Democrats seek to block fuel price rises

The Sweden Democrats plan to seek parliamentary support to extend temporary fuel tax cuts and prevent prices from rising, SVT reports.

The first part of the cuts is due to end on October 1, with the remaining reductions set to expire on December 1. If they are not extended, petrol could rise by about 4 kronor per litre and diesel by 3.4 kronor per litre on December 1.

The party plans to propose an initiative in the finance committee at its first meeting to extend the tax reductions. Sweden currently has a caretaker government, which cannot take political initiatives. The Sweden Democrats say they will seek support from a parliamentary majority to avoid political deadlock over the government question.
