Iceland’s government has not decided whether to move the police special unit from the National Police Commissioner’s office to another agency, mbl.is reported, citing a response from the Ministry of Justice. The unit is currently part of the commissioner’s office and handled 424 callouts last year.

Staffing has changed little over the years, according to recent reporting in Morgunblaðið. The number of callouts has more than sevenfold since 2014, while the unit has added only five officers since 2008.

Justice Minister Þorbjörg Sigríður Gunnlaugsdóttir said the unit could have 70 to 80 members. Funding has not been secured for 10 additional positions that have been authorised. The unit employed 46 officers last year.
