The Helsinki police have received two similar reports this summer regarding incidents involving children in the Laajasalo area. The first report was made at the end of June and early July, stating that preschool-aged children playing outside were attempted to be lured into a car. The second incident was reported last Thursday, August 8, where an elementary school-aged child was allegedly forcibly taken towards a vehicle.

A crime report has been filed for the latter incident, and an investigation is underway. Despite similarities in the methods used, police believe the incidents involved two different suspects. “Currently, it seems unlikely that the same individual is involved, but we are still verifying information,” said Chief Inspector Ritva Elomaa of the Helsinki Violent Crime Unit.

Witnesses in these reports have described different vehicles; in last week’s case, a light-colored van was noted. The first case is still in the investigation phase, and no formal crime report has been filed yet. Police are continuing to gather information from the child’s parents regarding that incident. The second case is being investigated under the charge of mild assault.

“The child cleverly resisted and managed to escape to a stairwell for safety,” Elomaa mentioned. There are reports on social media that the child bit the suspected abductor, but the police are not commenting on this until they have apprehended and interrogated the suspect.

Currently, there are no known suspects related to last week’s incident, and no arrests have been made. The investigation continues through interrogations and information verification. Police have definitively ruled out one possible individual. Elomaa advises witnesses of such incidents to remember precise details about the person and vehicle, emphasizing the importance of promptly reporting to the emergency services to dispatch police immediately.
