Klaksvik cemetery expansion will add 250 burial plots

The Úti í Grøv cemetery in Klaksvík is being expanded to address a shortage of space, with about 250 burial plots expected to become available in the coming years, KVF reports. Cemetery manager Jakobina Joensen said the expansion is necessary if the town is to continue growing.

The first phase will extend the cemetery to the south. In a few years, work is also expected to continue above the cemetery.

The materials used will be important. During the last expansion, in 2018, the material was mixed with Norwegian sand that did not bind well, causing the turf to slip. The exact materials for the new work have not yet been decided, but Joensen said the approach would be different this time.

Preparing the new burial plots will take years. Soil is due to be laid next year and will then need time to settle.

The larger cemetery will also require more maintenance. Joensen said the team has been understaffed, making it difficult to complete all the upkeep. She hopes funding will increase alongside the expansion so the cemetery can be maintained in the future.
