Icelandic firms win 14.4 million kroner for Brazil and India projects
Iceland Icelandic companies CRI and Verkís have received a total of 14,415,975 krónur in grants for projects in Brazil and India, mbl.is reported.
CRI will receive 10 million krónur to assess the feasibility of building green methanol production plants in northern and northeastern Brazil. The project would explore producing methanol from carbon dioxide emitted by industry or from biomass waste, using renewable energy.
The fuel could replace fossil fuels in transport and industry. The project is also intended to support new economic activity and build expertise in the region.
Verkís will receive just over 4.4 million krónur for a feasibility study of a pilot and education centre for climate-resilient greenhouse cultivation in Noida, near New Delhi. The project will draw on Icelandic expertise in geothermal energy, while adapting solutions to use heat pumps and solar power.
The centre aims to make agricultural production possible year-round despite changing climate conditions. It is also intended to serve as a model for similar development in geothermal regions of India.
The grants come from the Business SDG Fund, which is making awards for the 14th time. The companies will contribute at least half of the projects’ total costs.
