Seven agencies meet over suspected election fraud in Borlänge

Seven Swedish authorities and organisations held an emergency meeting on September 23 about the suspected election fraud in Borlänge, SVT reports. Meeting notes reviewed by SVT say the police investigation has high priority.

The meeting took place through the national election network, which coordinates work to protect Swedish elections. The news of suspected election fraud in Dalarna emerged on September 21.

Alongside the Swedish Civil Defence Agency, participants included the Swedish Security Service, the Police Authority, the Election Authority, the Agency for Psychological Defence, the National Cyber Security Centre and the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority.

According to the meeting notes, police had investigated the case in early September but closed it because of a lack of concrete circumstances. The notes now describe the investigation as high priority, while warning that it will take time.

The Agency for Psychological Defence had received questions, including from the Government Offices, about the case’s impact on the information environment. Its assessment was that interest in the issue was not especially intense at the time.

Participants also discussed the possibility of a new election. The Election Authority said it was too early to consider one and noted that a rerun had never been held at parliamentary level. The Security Service said it was following the investigation and had nothing further to add.
