The trial of Pétur Jökull Jónasson, suspected of being a key figure in Iceland’s largest cocaine smuggling case, began this morning. He is accused of involvement in an operation that attempted to smuggle 99 kilograms of cocaine into Iceland two years ago, a case that marks the most significant drug bust in the country’s history.

The cocaine was intercepted in the Netherlands during a joint operation between Dutch and Icelandic law enforcement in 2022, where it was hidden inside tree trunks. Four men were convicted related to this case last year, but Pétur was not in Iceland at the time. After a police appeal for his whereabouts, he eventually agreed to return to Iceland.

Investigations into the case kicked off five years ago. Pétur is alleged to be the individual referred to as “Nonni,” who purportedly directed the four men already sentenced. Court documents reveal that police tracked Pétur’s movements to Brazil around the time when the cocaine shipment departed for the port.

During today’s proceedings, Pétur denied knowing three of the convicted individuals but recognized one of them, Birgir Halldórsson. He had rented a space near Hverfisgötu years before. The prosecution pointed to statements made by one of the convicted men, which claimed he only communicated with a person named Pétur regarding the importation.

Pétur’s extensive travel in 2022, including stays in Spain, Thailand, Brazil, Germany, and the Netherlands, raised questions about his actions and intentions during that time. He admitted to being apprehensive about potential law enforcement actions that made him change his phone in Thailand upon noticing an Interpol alert.

The trial is ongoing at Reykjavík District Court with further hearings anticipated after the lunch break.
