Vogur hospital has been operating at half capacity for just over a month, mbl.is reports. Sigurður H. Helgason, director of Icelandic Health Insurance, said the current contract allows the agency to demand improvements if operations do not meet the contract’s requirements, giving the contracting party a formal deadline to respond. The clause has not been activated.

Asked whether the clause would be invoked if no solution is found within two weeks, Helgason declined to say. He said it would not be necessary if the agency could see that steps were being taken to improve the situation.

When problems arise, Icelandic Health Insurance first tries less severe measures to reach a shared goal before taking tougher action, Helgason said. He said the agency had followed that approach with SÁÁ.
