Hekla recalls 2,600 cars over corrosion risk

Hekla is recalling about 2,600 Škoda, Volkswagen and Audi vehicles in Iceland because a bolt connecting the steering gear to the chassis may corrode, mbl.is reports.

The recall covers about 2,230 Škoda Karoq, Kodiaq, Octavia and Superb cars; 378 Volkswagen Golf, Tiguan and Touran vehicles; and two Audi Q3s. The vehicles are model years 2015 to 2024.

Hekla will notify affected owners by letter. The repair involves replacing the bolt with a new one with improved corrosion protection, at no cost to owners. It is not yet known when replacement parts will be available in Iceland.

Hekla says no accidents or other incidents linked to the defect have been reported, and the vehicles are safe to drive until repaired. However, drivers should stop in a safe place, not continue driving and contact an authorised service provider if they hear an unusual metallic noise from the front of the car or notice a change in steering behaviour.
