Þórkatla says Grindavík resale plan needs legal changes

Property company Þórkatla says changes to the law are needed before it can carry out its plan to resell properties to Grindavík residents, mbl.is reported. The plan is nearly complete, but the company says the transactions are not standard property sales.

Þórkatla said it has discussed how the legal changes could be designed with the authorities. It will not disclose details of the resale plan until that work has concluded.

The company welcomed the findings of an updated risk assessment for Grindavík, saying they are an important prerequisite for people living in the town and for property sales there.

The plan is intended to give Grindavík residents priority to buy their former properties, secure financing for the purchases and provide a right to return for a specified period. It would also give residents time to decide.

Þórkatla said it was strongly committed to supporting residents who want to buy a different property from the one they previously owned, but that option also depends on the legal changes.
