Searchers find 1943 steam tug after nearly 83 years

A steam tug that disappeared in 1943 has been found after decades of searching, Yle reported. All nine crew members died when the Oulu 2 went missing.

The tug, owned by Oulu Oy, was heading out in November 1943 to collect the last log raft of the summer when it disappeared at sea between Hailuoto and Kalajoki.

The Bishop underwater search team, based in Kalajoki, found the wreck on 23 September in waters between Raahe and Pyhäjoki. Team member and safety diver Timo Taari told Yle he had been involved in the search for nearly 40 years.

The team identified the wreck by its dimensions, shape and structure, as well as a maker’s mark on the steam engine. Divers said it was in reasonably good condition.

The exact location is being withheld out of respect for the dead. The wreck’s owner, Stora Enso, and Bishop have urged people to leave the wreck and its belongings undisturbed.
