Police shoot knife-wielding man in Helsinki district

Police shot a man carrying a knife in Helsinki’s Kallio district after he approached officers and ignored their commands, Yle reported.

Police said the man did not stay on the ground after being shot. Officers used a Taser before handcuffing him.

Emergency services had received a report of a man standing by the entrance to a building on Hämeentie street with a crossbow. Police said he was instead carrying a knife and behaving threateningly.

The approximately 50-year-old Helsinki man is in hospital and has been detained. The incident is being investigated as violent resistance to a public official, possession of a dangerous object and a narcotics use offence.

The Police Crimes Unit at the National Prosecution Authority is conducting a preliminary review of the police use of a firearm.
