Moderates nominate Norlén for third term as speaker

Sweden’s Moderate Party has nominated Andreas Norlén for a third term as speaker of parliament, SVT reports. The Christian Democrats, Liberals and Sweden Democrats have also backed his nomination.

Norlén has served as speaker since 2018. Moderate parliamentary group leader Mattias Karlsson said the party believes Norlén has broad support among parliamentary parties.

The opposition has not yet named a candidate. Parties usually submit nominations the day before the speaker election, but they can do so up until the vote on Monday. The Social Democrats have said they want a speaker from their own party; a united red-green bloc could elect its candidate because it has a majority in parliament.

The Left Party has expressed support for Norlén this week and is considering backing him in the vote, but has not made a decision.
