Grindavík safety rated comparable to other hazard-exposed communities

The first part of a revised risk assessment for safety in Grindavík has found that conditions in the town are comparable to those in other Icelandic communities facing long-term natural hazards, mbl.is reports.

The assessment was presented on Tuesday evening. According to Grindavík municipality, its main conclusion is conditional on maintaining the measures considered necessary for public safety, continuous schooling and secure housing.

Grindavík is nevertheless distinctive because the natural hazard is considered imminent around the clock, throughout the year.

The assessment says general preparedness and protections in Grindavík are comparable to those in communities exposed to landslides and avalanches. The Icelandic Meteorological Office is monitoring the situation, while active warning and response procedures are in place with the office and civil protection authorities. The preparedness of emergency responders has also been increased, and evacuation plans are ready.

Lava barriers were reinforced after the July 2025 eruption, and work has been carried out to repair cracks, conduct ground surveys and close hazardous areas.

The findings update an earlier risk assessment dated May 31 and will influence the next steps in Grindavík’s reconstruction. A comprehensive risk assessment is expected in November, when the findings will be reviewed and the assessment updated and expanded.

The assessment will be updated as conditions change. It will remain under the responsibility of the civil protection department of the national police commissioner for as long as the civil protection uncertainty phase remains in effect.

The revision is based on proposals from the World Bank and the Grindavík committee.
