Passengers must notify Icelandair to keep return flights

Passengers who travel abroad by other means but plan to use an Icelandair ticket to return home must contact the airline before their scheduled departure, mbl.is reports. This is necessary to prevent the return ticket from being cancelled automatically.

The warning comes as Icelandair aircraft engineers have announced a potential strike during collective bargaining talks with the airline. If the strike goes ahead, many passengers may be unable to use their Icelandair tickets for outbound travel while still expecting to use the return leg.

Icelandair spokesperson Guðni Sigurðsson confirmed the procedure in response to an inquiry from mbl.is.

Under Icelandair’s policy, a passenger with a return booking who does not use the first leg automatically loses the ticket for the second leg.

Passengers must therefore contact Icelandair before the scheduled departure time of the outbound flight so the airline can ensure that the return leg is not cancelled when they fail to check in for the first flight.
