Minister urges action before fatal crash involving underage drivers

Infrastructure Minister Eyjólfur Ármannsson has called for action over children below driving-licence age using vehicles capable of speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour. He made the remarks in an address at the Icelandic Transport Authority’s traffic conference in Gamla Bíó on Tuesday, mbl.is reported.

The vehicles are believed to include motorcycles and electric or motorised scooters. Some are reportedly modified to increase their maximum speed.

Ármannsson said public concern was justified following the serious and fatal traffic accidents recorded so far this year. He said efforts were needed to reach young people who drive recklessly, as well as those who get into cars with people driving too fast.

Safe transport is one of the main objectives of the transport plan, the minister said. Traffic safety cannot be secured through legislation alone, but requires joint efforts and dialogue.
