Icelandair engineers set to strike as talks continue

An indefinite strike by Icelandair aircraft engineers is due to begin at midnight on Tuesday unless the dispute changes, mbl.is reports. No formal meetings have been scheduled, although talks between the parties are continuing, state mediator Ástráður Haraldsson said.

“There are no formal meetings scheduled, but talks are under way between the parties,” Haraldsson said, adding that there was little more he could say.

He said there was no timetable or specific proposal that could be made public.

Icelandair has rejected a proposal from the Icelandic Aircraft Engineers Association to postpone the strike. The airline said that, under the law, a notified strike cannot be postponed unilaterally with less than three days’ notice.

The association therefore had the option of unilaterally postponing the strike on Saturday. Icelandair also said that postponing the action would only increase the parties’ losses.
