Dementia affects 1,000 people and 4,000 relatives in Faroe Islands

About 1,000 people in the Faroe Islands are estimated to have dementia, while around 4,000 are relatives of people with the condition, KVF reported.

Dementia affects not only individuals but also their families, friends and wider circles. Responsibility for services for older people and people with dementia lies with the municipalities, but standards vary across the country because not all municipalities are equally well equipped. There is no minimum requirement for services.

The Faroese Alzheimer’s Association marked its 25th anniversary on Monday, coinciding with World Alzheimer’s Day. Despite this, dementia remains associated with taboo and a lack of knowledge.

KVF’s programme Breddin is examining the circumstances faced by people with dementia and their relatives, how to maintain good communication with people living with dementia, and how dementia services should be organised in the future.
