Keflavík Airport is introducing several transport improvements, including a new coach stop at the terminal, indoor information screens and a self-service taxi kiosk, mbl.is reports.
Ómar Svavarsson, Keflavík Airport’s managing director of business, said it was important for the airport to offer passengers a range of ways to travel to and from the airport. These include airport coaches, public buses, taxis, rental cars, bicycles and walking.
Both airport coaches and public bus route 55, which runs from Reykjavík to the airport, now drop passengers off at the terminal entrance. Route 55 had previously been authorised to do so but had not used that option.
Bus route 89, which runs from Reykjanesbær and Suðurnesjabær to the airport, will continue to use the old shelter for now. KEF plans to improve the shelter shortly, according to Ómar.
Isavia, which operates the airport, has also provided route 55 with designated bus spaces about 200 metres from the airport. Arriving passengers can walk there to catch the bus.
“It should be a convenient walk because we have now covered the pedestrian routes. Travellers will have good shelter from the weather,” Ómar said.
The changes add to existing transport arrangements. Passengers being driven to a flight can use the drop-off lane on the departures side, where they have five minutes to leave the vehicle and say goodbye. Those who need more time can park free of charge for 15 minutes in the departures parking area.
Ómar also highlighted the P2 arrivals parking area, where parking is free for 30 minutes. He said many people use all three options.
The airport wants to keep the departures drop-off lane, located closest to the entrance, flowing as smoothly as possible. Ómar said this was also a safety issue, as police and ambulances have been able to reach the terminal quickly when necessary.
Inside the terminal, new signs and information screens are being installed to make it easier to find the main transport options. Passengers can also scan QR codes to view timetables and key travel options.
New facilities for rental cars and taxis
The airport is also creating new facilities for rental car companies and completing a revised arrangement for the airport coach services.
A new self-service kiosk for passengers taking a taxi from the airport is expected to begin operating later this autumn. Passengers will be able to enter their destination, select the type of vehicle they need and receive advance information about the estimated price and duration of the journey. They can then place an order, after which the taxi will collect them.
