Ninety earthquakes recorded near Sundhnúkur crater sequence in Iceland
In the past 24 hours, approximately 90 small earthquakes have been recorded near the magma intrusion at the Sundhnúkur crater sequence. This increase in seismic activity has been observed daily over the past week, according to Böðvar Sveinsson, a natural hazard specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office. Yesterday, the number of earthquakes reached 80, compared to an average of around 70 quakes per day last week.
Monitoring data and model calculations from the Meteorological Office indicate that the magma pressure is continuing to rise beneath Svartsengi. This trend mirrors previous patterns seen weeks before recent volcanic eruptions and lava flows. The situation remains closely monitored as authorities assess the potential for further geological activity in the region.
