Finnish police investigate unusual case of family targeted in four attempted murders by now-deceased suspect

Police in Tampere, Finland are investigating an unusual case in which a single individual is suspected of four attempted murders. The attempts targeted a family of four, including two children. The injured individuals were taken to hospital for treatment. The suspect in the crime is now deceased.

The suspect, known as Jarno to protect the privacy of victims and the suspect’s close circle, had a close relationship with the accused. Jarno has known the suspect for about ten years and described him as a positive, creative person who was always building something. According to Jarno, the suspect held several different jobs in recent years, but the reason for his rapid job changes is unknown.

The suspect was a man in his 40s who lived in Pirkanmaa. He had no criminal convictions from the Pirkanmaa District Court since the 2000s, but had about ten debt judgments, all of which were filed in 2023. According to Jarno, the suspect had no issues with drugs or alcohol and openly and unashamedly discussed minor setbacks in his life.

Jarno had met with the suspect just a few days before the attempted murders. The suspect had borrowed some parts from Jarno for his projects. Jarno described him as “completely normal, always smiling.” He cannot comprehend any logical explanation for the crime, saying that trying to reconcile the suspect’s cheerful face and optimistic personality with the crime scene is beyond his comprehension.

The crime took place in a private residence in the Linnainmaa district in late June. The suspected acts were committed with an edged weapon. Police have stated that there was some connection between the victims and the suspect. The family was not randomly chosen as victims.

According to the head of the investigation, Jani Ortamala, the connection is not due to a family relationship, but the suspect and the parents of the family knew each other in some other way. Jarno does not know what the suspect’s relationship to the victims was. He learned of his death on the same day.

Police have stated that there is no suspicion of a crime related to the suspect’s death, which is being investigated to determine the cause. According to the police, the events are not related to organized crime. As the suspect is deceased, the case will not go to court, but police are still investigating the course of events.
