Police investigate scuffle at Helsinki school cafeteria

Police are investigating a possible violent incident involving at least one pupil and a kitchen worker at Kalasatama Comprehensive School in Helsinki, Yle reported.

The incident took place in the school cafeteria last Friday. A report requesting an investigation has been filed with the Helsinki Police Department.

The inquiry was still at an early stage on Monday afternoon, and a formal pre-trial investigation had not yet begun. The possible criminal classification will be determined later.

Police were contacting people connected to the incident on Monday and investigating whether security camera footage or other evidence was available. Based on the report, the incident involved violence.

School principal Kati Pennanen declined to comment on the pupil’s age or gender, or on whether any of the parties were injured, citing privacy concerns.

The kitchen worker involved no longer works at the school. Pennanen did not say whether the pupil involved was currently attending regular classes.

According to Pennanen, the school has discussed the next steps with police. Officers did not visit the school on Friday.

School activities are continuing normally, apart from the temporary suspension of the snack service. Pupils may bring their own snacks while arrangements for the service are being made. Parents have been informed about Friday’s incident.

Kalasatama Comprehensive School serves pupils from grades one to nine. Helsingin Sanomat was the first to report the incident.
