Expanding port in Norðragøtu presents significant challenges amid environmental concerns
Expanding the port in Norðragøtu presents significant challenges.
For the harbor to be developed, it is necessary to remove the rock piles and extend the port towards Gøtunesi. The environmental and social impact will be extensive, both during construction and once the port is operational.
Due to the narrow entry through the fjord, the benefits of expanding the harbor in Norðragøtu will not be as substantial as the solution being proposed under Gøtueiði. This information comes from an environmental assessment regarding the port, which is being conducted by a subsidiary of Varðin and Eystur Municipality, intended for a site north of Tjørnunes, near Gøtueiði.
Limited possibilities exist for harbor operations in Gøtu. Larger vessels cannot dock in Gøtu during poor weather, and available space for industrial and related activities is very restricted. The coastal entry in Gøtuvík is especially susceptible to adverse weather, making it unfeasible for Varðin’s vessels to remain in Norðragøtu under these conditions.
To improve the accessibility and functionality of the harbor in Norðragøtu, Eystur Municipality suggests that the approach needs to be narrowed, such as by adding a rock pile from Gøtugjógv towards the existing rock pile.
