Fire extinguished at wrecked vehicle in Patterson Airport, Njarðvíkurheiði
Emergency services successfully extinguished a fire that erupted in a wrecked vehicle at the old hangars of Patterson Airport, located on Njarðvíkurheiði. The police and firefighters were present at the scene, responding to reports of the blaze.
Thick, black smoke was observed rising from the burning car for some time; however, authorities assured that there was no imminent danger to the public. The fire was reported around 11 PM, and it appears that the vehicle had been abandoned at the site for an extended period.
Patterson Airport was constructed by the United States military during World War II, beginning operations in 1942. It was one of two airfields established by American forces, with the other originally named Meeks Field, which later became known as Keflavik International Airport. Patterson Airport was specifically designated for fighter aircraft and has remained unused since the end of the war.
