Puffin population shows signs of recovery in Mykinesi

Sunday 11th 2024 on 21:48 in
Faroe Islands

Research indicates a positive turn in the puffin population in Mykinesi, with signs of recovery observed since 2017. Silas Olofson, a bird expert, noted that the first chicks born during this period are now beginning to thrive and establish their own nesting sites.

The natural conditions significantly affect the puffin stock, estimated at around 60,000 pairs, possibly even more at present.

Olofson emphasized the impact of the pathway to the island being closed since 2021, which has provided a safe haven for the birds. This closure has allowed the puffins to reclaim their territory across the island, enhancing their breeding success.

Further details were shared in a news segment broadcast on Sunday evening.
