Visitors may soon gain access to Mykinesholm in the Faroe Islands

It is possible that visitors may soon be allowed to walk again in Mykinesholm, although any reopening would likely be limited to a small number of people to protect local wildlife, according to Finn Hansen, chairman of the Bird Management Board at Lambin, the largest puffin breeding area in the Faroe Islands. A decision is expected to be made this autumn.

The path to Mykinesholm was closed in 2021, initially for the construction of a new bridge, and later due to landslides affecting the trail that traverses Lambin. Since then, no tourists have been permitted access to the islet, but that could soon change.

Hansen emphasized the need for careful considerations, particularly concerning the puffins that nest in Lambin, which is directly along the path. Additionally, the exceptional natural beauty of the islet is another factor prompting the owners to contemplate reopening access to the public.

“There are many people who wish to visit in smaller groups, and if a decision is made to reopen the path, it will be done with strict limitations,” Hansen noted.

Listeners can find more details about the subject in the news segment that aired on Saturday evening.
