Man remanded over suspected aggravated data breach

Yle reports that the Pirkanmaa District Court remanded a man born in 1979 on Friday on probable cause of aggravated data breach. The suspect is reportedly from Tampere.

The case was heard behind closed doors. The National Bureau of Investigation is investigating the alleged breach, and the deadline for bringing charges was set for 25 February 2027.

The suspected offence began last August and continued for about a year. The man was arrested on Tuesday this week, while the crime report was filed on Monday.

Police said the preliminary investigation is at an early stage and that more information will be released when possible without compromising the investigation.

Suspect previously worked at Tampere University

Yle reports that the suspect previously worked at Tampere University. The university confirmed that he was a former employee and said it was aware of a police investigation connected to him.

Yle also reports that the man has no convictions recorded by the Pirkanmaa District Court.

Aggravated data breach can be punished with a fine or up to three years in prison.
