Tórshavn council vote leaves mountain bike trail plan unresolved

The future of a mountain bike trail outside Tórshavn remains uncertain after a city council vote, KVF reported.

Heidi Lava Elgeirsdóttir proposed sending the matter back to the administration before referring it to the relevant committee and the city council. The proposal received six votes in favour and six against and therefore failed.

Bergur Robert Dam Jensen, a member of the council majority and the cultural affairs committee chaired by Elgeirsdóttir, voted against the proposal. Heðin Mortensen, who is also part of the majority, abstained.

Tróndur Sigurðsson asked for it to be recorded in the minutes that he intended to appeal the council’s decision to put the matter to a vote after he had withdrawn his request for a decision. He had asked for the matter to be discussed and decided by the council.

In a letter to readers on August 27, Mayor Elsa Berg said the city’s cultural affairs committee would propose that Tórshavn Municipality, together with mountain bikers and the cycling and triathlon federation, review the plan for a mountain bike trail at Vesturvarði and examine other options.

Berg said there was no longer a majority on the council in favour of the trail at Vesturvarði. However, the matter was not discussed at the committee meeting on September 8 and was postponed.
