Drivers told to move cars before Copenhagen world championships

Drivers in Copenhagen are being urged to move their cars before the weekend’s World Athletics Road Running Championships, as parking bans will be introduced along the race routes, DR reports.

Sparta Atletik and Løb, which is organising the event with Dansk Atletik, says all parked cars must be removed from roads used by the races. Vehicles left in place will be removed at the owner’s expense, according to Ekstra Bladet.

“We recommend that all drivers parked in the streets follow the signs and have their cars removed,” said Dorte Vibjerg, chief executive of Sparta Atletik and Løb.

Vibjerg said the complete parking ban is required for a world championship and by the international governing body. Around 60,000 people are expected to take part, while between 100,000 and 150,000 spectators are expected along the routes.

She also urged people to use public transport during the weekend, particularly the metro. Traffic gates will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross the routes at selected locations.

The event features three distances: one mile, five kilometres and a half marathon. The one-mile and five-kilometre races will take place on Saturday, followed by the half marathon on Sunday.
